What publications are available on the IET Digital Library?

All IET journals, magazines and conference publications from 1994 onwards are published on the IET Digital Library as part of the front file. For a full list of publications available, please take a look at the front file coverage table.

Also available is the IET Digital Library Journals Archive. With over 70,000 articles available, this is the complete collection of research journals published by the Institution between the years 1872 and 1993. To find out which publications are included as part of the journals archive, take a look at the journals archive coverage table.

What's the difference between a front file and an archive subscription?

A current or front file subscription allows users to access all current issues published for 2010 as well as all backfile for that title from 1994-2009 (where available). For a full list of what is included as part of a front file subscription, please take a look at our front file coverage table.

IET Digital Library Journals Archive subscriptions include access to all published IEE journals from 1872-1993. For a full list of what is included as part of an archive subscription, please take a look at our archive coverage table.

How much does it cost to subscribe?

We have seperate prices for print and online publications, or combined print and online subscriptions via the IET Digital Library. Prices in US $ are valid accross the Americas; prices in £ sterling apply across the rest of the world. Take a look at the pricing table for details. Please note that archive subscriptions are available as online only.

• We will also require you to sign and return the IET Digital Library Licence Agreement to the address above as this will give us the relevant contact and access information (which IP Addresses to set up) to enable us to set up your online access.

Can I purchase an individual article online?

Yes. Simply click the 'Buy This' button on the abstract page of the article you are interested in. Click 'Quick Article Buy Online' to purchase a PDF online with a credit card, or 'Order Article Offline' to purchase a print copy of the article from our document delivery service, InfoTrieve. All articles in the IET Digital Library cost $30 per article (inclusive of VAT).

You will receive an email with the article attached as a PDF, plus a link to the article online, where you can also view the references, and additional information within 24 hours or purchase. The IET grants you permission to save and print article files for personal reference and use only. If you are obtaining an article on behalf of someone else, you may forward the article to them. Other than this limited use, you may not redistribute, republish, or repost the article on the Internet or other locations, nor may you create extensive or systematic archives of these articles.

How do I access articles published prior to 1994?

Articles published prior to 1994 are now available as part of the IET Digital Library Journals Archive.

If you would like to access a particular article that is not available on the IET Digital Library, we suggest you contact your library first to ascertain whether it is contained in the print collections. You can order the article from a document delivery provider such as Infotrieve or alternatively use the IET Library document supply service to obtain a copy of the article.

What is E-first?

All IET Research Journals are published as E-first. Articles are published online as soon as they are individually passed-for-press. Once an issue is complete it is closed, and a new open 'E-first' issue is created. Links to 'advanced articles' can be found on the journal homepages, and in the listing of available Volume/Issues.

'Advanced articles' contain the same information as an ordinary article, plus linked references and Inspec indexing where available. They can be cited in the same way as any other article, with the volume, issue number and page, plus the DOI (Digital Object Identifier).

What has happened to Engineering & Technology and the IET Magazines?

From January 2008, Engineering & Technology increased its publication frequency to include coverage from the industry sectors previously covered by the other IET magazines.

As Engineering & Technology expanded at the beginning of 2008, the following IET Magazines ceased publication at the end of 2007:

Communications Engineer

Control & Automation (formerly Computing and Control Engineering)

Electronics (formerly Electronics Systems and Software)

Engineering Management

Information Professional

Manufacturing (formerly Manufacturing Engineer)

Power Engineer

By including the content of these magazines within the new enlarged format and increasing the frequency with which we report on these important industry sectors, Engineering & Technology now provides more up-to-date and in-depth coverage. Readers also have access to a broader range of material without having to order/access copies of additional IET magazines.

Can I login with my IET website username and password?

The IET website login is not integrated with the IET Digital Library. This website is hosted on the Scitation Platform, provided by AIP, on behalf of the IET. You will need to register on Scitation, if you wish to use advanced features such as myArticles and myPublications.

Can I access the full-text of articles for free?

Full access to the IET Digital Library is not included in the IET membership package. However, you can freely browse the table of contents and abstracts of all articles in the IET Digital Library. IET members can also subscribe to Electronics Letters, Micro & Nano Letters and the IET Research Journals at the following IET member rates.

Will I receive a discounted price for subscriptions?

IET member rates are available for print or online subscriptions to Electronics Letters, Micro & Nano Letters and the IET Research Journals. IET member rates are available only on orders placed by members directly with the IET.

Can I access Engineering & Technology magazine on the IET Digital Library?

IET members who have an online subscription to either Electronics Letters, Micro & Nano Letters or one or more parts of the IET Research Journals via the IET Digital Library can also access Engineering & Technology magazine as well as all other ceased magazine titles from 1994 onwards (where available) on the IET Digital Library.

IET Members who do not have an online subscription via the IET Digital Library can freely download PDFs from recent issues of Engineering & Technology via the Engineering & Technology area of the IET website.

Which publications do I have full-text access to?

Go to the 'MyPublications' link on the top menu, and then click on 'MySubscriptions' tab. The publications listed here are those to which you have full-text access, either through your library or through your personal subscription. If a publication is not listed and you believe you should have full-text access, please contact ietdl@theiet.org.

Is access complementary with my print subscription?

Access to the IET Digital Library is not complementary with a print subscription. However, if you have a combined print and online subscription you will be to able access the full-text of articles and use other site features. Please contact ietdl@theiet.org if you believe you should have access to full-text, but are unable to download PDFs.

Do I still need to register on Scitation to access?

Individual subscribers will be asked to register so your account can be activated. For all other users registration is entirely optional. However, even if you access IET Digital Library through a library subscription, you may still benefit from registering on Scitation. You will be able to use personalisation features such as myArticles, myPublications, manage your table of contents alerts and email articles to colleagues.

Can I access off-campus with my ATHENS login?

No, unfortunately the IET Digital Library does not support ATHENS authentication.

How do I set-up a multiple site subscription?

A single site is a localised site (one geographical location) that is under a single administration. For an organisation with locations in more than one city, each city is considered to be a different site. For an organisation that has multiple locations in the same city that are administered independently, each location is considered to be a different site. How can I update my access details or contact information?

How do I search for articles in a particular publication?

Browse to the journal you would like to search and click on the 'Search' link in the left-hand menu to search only that specific journal. You can use the 'Search This Issue' link to search the current journal, or 'Search all issues' to search accross the backfile.

Alternatively, if you wish to search a number of specific journal titles, go to the Advanced search page. From here you can select multiple titles from the drop-down menu and perform a search for keywords in the title or abstract, Inspec indexing and classification, or author name.

How can I set-up an email table of contents alert?

Click on the TOC Alerts link to go to the Email Alerts Service Sign-up/Cancel page. You will need to enter your email address and select the journal title(s) you are interested in receiving email table of contents for, plus your preference of either text or HTML format. You will receive an email, which you should reply to with 'OK' in the body to confirm. Finally you will be sent an email notifying you that your subscription to the service has been activated. How do I save an article in MyArticles?

You can choose and add articles from any HTML Table of Contents or abstract-view page, or from a Search Results page (journal subscribers only). Simply click on the 'Article Options' drop-down box, select 'myArticles' and click go.
Titles you select are added to a list or "collection" that includes links to the abstract and full-text which can be viewed or downloaded (subscribers only). Each myArticles collection can include as many as 50 articles. The collection is accessible indefinitely, as long as it is accessed at least once in 90 days (collections that are not accessed at least once every 90 days are erased).

Please Note: If you are an existing Scitation user, please login. New users will need to register first before they can use myArticles.

How can I send an article citation to a colleague?

Article collections saved in myArticles as 'shared' collections can be emailed to colleagues for use in your collaborative efforts, or to simply share articles of common interest. View the 'myArticles' page and from there click on "Manage Collections."

If the collection you wish to share is a private collection, click on "Make Public". (You can share only public collections.) Return to the MyArticles page and click on "Email Collection." You will be prompted for the recipient's name and email address, and can include a subject line to identify the contents of the email. You can also add a brief message to the recipient.

How can I add journals to MyPublications?

myPublications provides quick access to the publications in which you are interested. You can add or delete from MyPublications any time you are signed in by following these steps:

• Click on the Add Journals link to bring up a list of available publications.
• Click in the box to the left of the title to select publications for addition to MyPublications.
• When you're finished indicating your choices, click on the "Add Selected" button on the right.

You can also add publications to myPublications from any of the Scitation Browse Publications areas (Browse Alphabetically, Browse by Publisher, or Browse by Category Listing).

How do I search Inspec indexing?

If you find an article of particular interest, the Inspec Indexing, the 'Inspec Thesaurus' terms or Classification Codes and Keywords that apply to the article are available in the 'Inspec and Other Keywords' section on the article abstract page.

You can search the Inspec Indexing, Classification Codes and Keywords using the drop-down menu on the Advanced Search page. Simply add the terms you wish to search for into the text box, select the appropriate field from the menu and click 'Search'

For example:
Search for "power system protection" in the Inspec Indexing field
Search for "B8140*" in the Inspec Classification Codes field

Each Inspec record is assigned 5 to 6 thesaurus terms on average. Thesaurus terms are chosen to reflect all of the important concepts in a document using standardised terminology. This allows the searcher to retrieve a concept without knowing all its synonyms.

Inspec Classification Codes specify the subject area of a document. At least one Classification Code is assigned for the main subject matter of each record, and additional codes may be assigned for subsidiary subjects.

The Inspec Classification is divided into five main sections:

• Section A: Physics
• Section B: Electrical & Electronic Engineering
• Section C: Computers & Control
• Section D: Information Technology
• Section E: Manufacturing & Production Engineering

Where a technique can be utilised in many different subject areas, (e.g. finite element analysis), Classification Codes can be used to refine the search to a particular area such as mechanical engineering applications. This avoids using many Thesaurus Terms to specify the subject area.
